The Coffee Bean grows naturally in the highlands of Ethiopia where for thousands of years it has been used by the local people. The beans were then taken to Yemen by Muslim traders, possibly as early as the 12th century, where coffee was first made into drinks.Coffee was not cultivated in other parts of the world until around the 17th century. However, production these days is world-wide and many countries are now famous for their coffee.Each coffee plant takes its individual characteristics from the soil, it's altitude and rainfall. Crops are harvested by hand and each plant yields only 21lbs of bean a year during its productive life. These harvests are at the mercy of the elements and bad weather can mean the loss of an entire crop. This explains the high value that coffee has always held as a commodity. |
